ATACA is made up of everyday Australians who are concerned for the health of Australian smokers and want the issue tackled intelligently with Harm Reduction options and smoking alternatives, not blanket bans and junk science.
ATACA supports the availability of low risk tobacco options such as Swedish Snus and electronic cigarettes to dramatically reduce the damage caused both directly and indirectly by tobacco smoking.
ATACA is supported by contributions from our members as well as several of Australia’s electronic cigarette vendors. They may not be able to legally tell you that their products work brilliantly for smoking cessation, but we can.
ATACA is not supported in any way by the tobacco industry, the pharmaceutical industry or by any government assistance.
ATACA is a totally open organisation. Should you disagree with any point raised on this site please contact us with your counter argument (complete with peer reviewed sources) and content will be changed according.
Who does ATACA represent?
ATACA is here to speak on behalf of all Australian tobacco product users. We already know that almost 20% of our population smokes, but if we had the figures to include smokeless tobacco and electronic cigarettes users, this figure would be higher still. Even at 19%, that’s currently over 4.3 million people.
Getting solid numbers on eletronic cigarette and snus users in Australia is difficult due to the current legal situation. Snus is legal to import (although heavily taxed with no justification for said taxation) and electronic cigarettes with nicotine currently exist in a legal grey area. Neither can be legally sold in Australia.
What are ATACA’s goals?
- To represent the interests of all tobacco users in Australia.
- The full legalisation and retail sale of the lowest-risk tobacco alternatives: Swedish Snus and Electronic Cigarettes with nicotine – with appropriate taxation of these products based on health risks (1% of the risk should mean only 1% of the taxation).
- Complete and truthful reporting on the health risks associated with all forms of tobacco usage, especially the proven and verifiable risks of Second-Hand Smoke.
- Honesty in the reasoning behind future tobacco legislation and smoking bans. Public Policy needs to be based on solid science, not hypothetical rhetoric or de-normalisation.
- Accountability for Australia’s tobacco taxation revenue – ensuring that all tobacco revenue goes back towards health care and science-based medical research to improve the health of all Australians, not funding organisations who ignore the real science over their own pre-defined agendas.
